Scheurich Keramik West German Rumtopf Preserving Jar - Volcanic Red Flambé Glaze, Model 865-31, c.1970

A large and striking Rumtopf by Scheurich Keramik, one of West Germany's most celebrated mid-century pottery makers.

Traditionally used to preserve seasonal fruits in rum and sugar throughout the summer — ready to serve as a richly boozy compote at Christmas — these jars have become highly collectible pieces of post-war European ceramics in their own right.

This example carries Scheurich's distinctive volcanic red flambé glaze, deepening to near-black at the base, rim and scrolled handles. The body is embossed with a farmhouse fruit pattern — grapes, pear, plum, strawberry and raspberry — rendered with vivid painterly detail against the saturated red ground. The embossed cursive "Rumtopf" lettering wraps the upper body. The original domed lid with embossed grape and leaf decoration and matching flambé glaze is present and fits perfectly. Interior glazed throughout in a warm amber honey tone.
