Robin Pavitt for Polden Pottery — hand-thrown stoneware pouring jug in speckled off-white glaze with celadon blue-grey interior. Impressed ROBIN mark. Chilton Polden, Somerset, c.1974–1981.

Description

A quietly beautiful piece of British studio pottery from Robin Pavitt, who ran the Polden Pottery Studio in Chilton Polden, Somerset between 1974 and 1981. Hand-thrown in speckled stoneware and finished in a warm off-white glaze that shifts to a soft celadon blue-grey at the interior and rim, this generous pouring jug is functional studio ware at its most considered. The throwing rings are left visible on the bulbous body, the spout cleanly pulled, the flat strap handle neatly applied. Iron spotting from the clay body marks the surface with characteristic natural variation.

Pavitt worked in the tradition of the British craft pottery revival, producing functional pieces from his Somerset studio during a period when small regional potteries were at the heart of British craft culture. The base carries an impressed ROBIN stamp — Pavitt's personal maker's mark — consistent with the studio's output across its seven-year life. Pieces from short-lived studio potteries of this era, particularly those with clear maker attribution, are increasingly sought after by collectors of 1970s British craft.

Features

Hand-thrown bulbous body in speckled off-white stoneware. Warm off-white glaze to exterior with soft celadon blue-grey tones to interior and rim. Natural iron spotting throughout — characteristic of the clay body and firing process. Throwing rings visible on body. Cleanly pulled pouring spout. Flat strap handle. Impressed ROBIN mark to base.

Condition

Chip to the pouring lip exposing raw stoneware — visible in photographs. Chipping to the foot rim at the base, also shown in photographs. No cracks or restoration. Natural iron spotting throughout consistent with clay body and firing — not damage. Both chips are reflected in the price.
