Lord Nelson Pottery - Jamaica Inn Tankard, Staffordshire c.1970

A characterful piece of mid-century English souvenir pottery from Lord Nelson Pottery of Staffordshire, one of Britain's most prolific producers of decorative earthenware. This sturdy beer tankard is glazed in a rich treacle amber and decorated with a transfer-printed scene of Jamaica Inn — the legendary Bodmin Moor coaching house immortalised by Daphne du Maurier — showing figures at work outside the stone inn, barrels being rolled, and the inn sign hanging above. A silver lustre band finishes the rim, intact and bright.

Lord Nelson's tavern and inn series were produced for the tourist trade throughout the 1960s and 70s and are increasingly collected as a distinct category of British tourist ceramics. The Jamaica Inn subject gives this piece particular regional resonance for collectors of Cornish memorabilia or du Maurier enthusiasts. The base carries the Lord Nelson Pottery crowned N mark with England stamp, consistent with output from this period.
