HB Quimper Faience Wall Plate - Breton Peasant Woman, Brittany, France, c.1960

Quimper faience is one of the great traditions of French decorative ceramics, produced in the Breton city of Quimper since the late 17th century. The HB mark — standing for Henriot-Bouquillard — is among the most respected and collectable of the Quimper potteries, known for their hand-painted peasant figures, vivid folk colours and distinctive regional character.

This plate is a fine example of the genre. At the centre, a Breton peasant woman is depicted in profile in traditional dress — white coiffe headdress, blue shawl, layered purple and orange skirt — holding a single red flower, with stylised birds in flight above and fern fronds to either side. The scalloped rim carries the classic Quimper decorative border: repeating blue dash edging, fern sprays and small blue flower clusters. The HB Quimper signature appears on the face below the central figure.

Two small chips are present — shown in the images and reflected in the price. The painting is clear and the colours are strong. Comes complete with a wire wall hanger.
