Granit Hungary Multicolour Cup & Saucer Set - Six Colours, Original Box c.1960

During the 1960s and 70s, Hungary's state-run ceramics factories produced some of the most boldly designed and well-crafted tableware in Eastern Europe — made for export to Western markets and priced to sell, but built with genuine quality and design ambition. Granit was one of those factories, and this cup and saucer set is a perfect example of what made their output so appealing.

Six cups, six saucers, six colours — red, blue, grey, green, black and burnt orange — each finished in the same crisp white pinstripe decoration that runs vertically on the cups and radiates outward on the saucers like a graphic sunburst. The forms are clean and modern: straight-sided cups with angular handles, saucers with a satisfying weight and depth. White glazed interiors to all cups.

The set comes complete in its original gift box — a bold red and cream polka dot design that is as much a period artefact as the ceramics themselves. The Granit triangular backstamp is present to the base of the cups. Condition throughout is excellent — this set has clearly seen little or no use.

A genuinely joyful piece of mid-century Eastern European design, complete and boxed.
