Gibsons & Sons - Stoneware Coffee Pot with Metal Flip Lid, Burslem c.1920

A quietly compelling piece of English domestic stoneware from Gibsons & Sons of Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, dating to the 1920s. The tall cylindrical body is finished in a warm chocolate brown glaze — glossy to the upper half, giving way to a richly textured pebbled surface on the lower body, separated by a fine beaded band. The contrast between the two finishes gives this small pot a real tactile presence. The angular D-section handle is clean and well-formed, the pinched pouring lip neatly integrated into the rim.

The original metal flip lid is present and functional, hinged across the centre with a Bakelite knop — the kind of practical detail that speaks to a piece made for daily use in a working kitchen rather than display. The interior of the lid carries the mark J.G. & Sons / Made in England, confirming this as the original fitting rather than a later replacement. The base carries the Gibsons & Sons diamond mark with Made in England stamp.
