C.H. Brannam Royal Barum Ware — Terracotta Cottage Jug, Devon c.1930

A sturdy and characterful jug from C.H. Brannam of Barnstaple, one of Devon's most celebrated potteries and holder of Royal patronage since Queen Victoria placed an order in 1885. This is classic Brannam cottage ware — the generous bulbous body left in the natural unglazed terracotta, the warm red Devon clay speaking for itself, while the interior, lip and handle are finished in a deep, glossy treacle glaze. The loop handle is generous and well-formed, the pouring lip cleanly pulled.

After C.H. Brannam's death in 1937 the emphasis at the pottery moved away from art ware back towards plainer domestic pieces, and this jug is a fine example of that honest, unpretentious tradition. The printed circular mark reading Royal Barum Ware / C.H. Brannam Ltd / England dates this to the post-1914 limited company period. A piece that wears its North Devon origins with quiet confidence.

Good vintage condition. No chips or cracks. Natural iron spotting and kiln variation to the treacle glaze interior consistent with age and manufacture. Unglazed terracotta body shows honest patina of age and use. Chip to lip — priced accordingly.
